Rethinking the Art of Science of Physician Engagement Metrics

When it comes to truly understanding the strength of relationships forged between healthcare organizations and physicians, “engagement” stands out as one of the most commonly tracked metrics. There is a good reason for this. A wealth of research has been produced by organizational scientists demonstrating that high levels of engagement triggers high states of organizational performance. The theory is simple. Engaged physicians perform better on the job. The better physicians perform, the more likely an organization is to be successful. It is also now known that the benefits of engagement extend well beyond the workplace. For example, highly engaged physicians are more likely to serve their organizations as brand advocates wherever they go—spreading enthusiasm about their organizations whenever opportunities arise.
