2016 Updates to the Advanced Practice Clinician Compensation Survey

The National Healthcare Advanced Practice Clinician Compensation Survey was launched in late summer of 2016 with significant updates to better capture the current trends and methodologies surrounding Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant pay and pay practices.  Compensation plans for these roles are becoming increasingly multi-faceted and the survey instrument has been re-designed to capture these distinct segments of total compensation including:

  • Differential or “Add-On” Payments
  • On-Call/ER Call/Patient Consult Payments
  • Overtime Payments
  • Individual Productivity Compensation
  • General Incentive Payments

Several expansions and improvements were made to the special pay practices questions within the instrument to better capture these distinctive payments and methodologies relating to:

  • Recruitment practices
  • Individual performance incentives
  • Compensation philosophy
  • Vacation/Holiday/PTO plans
  • Stand-by Pay/On-Call Shift
  • On-Call Coverage - Emergency Room/Patient Consult
  • Shift Differentials
  • Reimbursement for CME/Fees

Many organizations are facing challenges in determining appropriate leadership structure for their growing number of APCs.  The survey gathers information on compensation payments and reporting relationships for supervisors, managers, directors, and executives to provide insight on leadership practices in the industry.

The 2016 APC Survey also expands upon the traditional staff positions surveyed to include not only nurse practitioners and physician assistants, but additional advanced practice providers, including:

  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
  • Psychologist (PhD)
  • Child Psychologist (PhD)
  • Neuropsychologist (PhD)
